Launched in February 2004, “Facebook” is a social networking website that is privately owned and operated by Facebook, Inc. Membership was originally limited by its founders to Harvard students but was expanded to include students at other colleges and universities, then to high school students, and finally to anyone aged 13 and over.
Registered Facebook users can add people as friends and send them messages, and update their personal profiles to notify friends about themselves. Additionally, users can join networks as well as create groups and fan pages.
Facebook allows anyone who declares themselves to be aged 13 or older to become a member of the website.
Each of the three libraries in the Union County Library System use social networking websites as an additional way to let area residents know about upcoming events, library-related news, and to keep in touch with library users.
