What’s happening

Here is a list of upcoming special events and activities from The Public Library of Union County’s Children’s Services department (all offerings are free unless otherwise noted):
- Getting Ready for Kindergarten – This program for children who will be starting kindergarten in the fall of 2011 will meet on the first Thursday of the month through May 5 for stories and practice of skills that are essential for success in school.
- Lap-Sit Story Time, for children from birth to one year, along with a parent or caregiver, will be held at 11 a.m. on September 17. It is generally held the first and third Friday of the month throughout the year.
- Toddler Story Time – This 10-week program for children who are one and two years old, along with their parents or caregivers, features stories, finger plays, and songs. It is held on Tuesdays at 9:30 a.m. The fall session will begin on September 7 and continue through November 16.
- Preschool Story Time – A 10-week program for children ages three through five, along with their parents or caregivers, that features stories, flannel board, and crafts. It is held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10 a.m. The fall session begins on September 7 and 8 and will continue through November 16 and 17.
- Germ City! – What is left on your hands after you wash them? Sheila Packer, Community Health Education Instructor for Evangelical Hospital, will present “Germ City” — a fun “hands-on” program to learn about washing up — at 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 16.
The program features a large, walk-through tent tunnel equipped with black lights. Participants apply a special “Glitter Bug Potion Lotion” and enter the tunnel to see pretend germs on their hands. After they wash, they re-enter to see whether they have gotten rid of the “bugs.”
The program is presented as part of the Union County Library System’s “Libraries for Health” project, which has been (partially) funded with federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) funds administered by the Office of Commonwealth Libraries. - Daddy’s Story Time – A program for children and their fathers or other special adult male is held at 10 a.m. on the third Saturday of the month from September 18 through May 21.
- Let’s Explore History – A program for children ages 6 through 11 that focuses on people in history is held at 6:30 p.m. on the fourth Thursday of the month from September 23 through May 26 (not Nov. or Dec.). The program includes stories, a movie, and an activity.
- Evening Story Time – A program for preschool children and their parents or caregivers that usually is held at 6:30 p.m. on the third Thursday of the month from October 21 through May 19 (not Dec.), and features stories and crafts.
