What’s happening
The Public Library for Union County offers a range of regular programming and special activities for adults.
Here’s what’s happening now:
- Knitting group. Adults and teens who are interested in conversation and companionship while knitting are invited to gather at the library on Mondays from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Participants are asked to bring their own yarn and knitting needles.
- Mah jongg group. Teens and adults who know how to play the American version of the ancient Chinese tile game of mah jongg are invited to participate with a mah jongg group that meets on Tuesday afternoons at 1 p.m. Please register to attend.
- Tai Chi classes. On the first and third Wednesdays of each month, Kit Sisson leads free tai chi classes at 1 p.m. for teens and adults. Tai chi is a traditional Chinese “soft-style” martial art. Please register to attend.
- Sat., Sept. 11 @ 3 p.m. — Chinese musical journey. A one-hour visual tour of Hangzhou, the capitol of the Zhejiang Province in China, accompanied by music played on traditional Chinese instruments, will be presented by Chia-Ching Chang. The DVD is from Naxos’ “Chinese Musical Journeys” collection and covers sites important during China’s Middle Kingdom. Please register to attend.
- Thurs., Sept. 16 @ 7 p.m. — Adult Book Group will meet to discuss Michelle Huneven’s Blame. The group’s meetings are free and informal. No registration is needed.
- Sat., Sept. 18 @ 3 p.m. — Mr. Chia-Ching Chang will present a Chinese music program using You Tube videos. Please register to attend.
- Wed., Sept. 22 @ 7 p.m. — Alternative Healing: Energy Work. Arlyne Hoyt, a practitioner of qigong and shiatsu, will discuss alternative methods of healing that deal with energy work. Please register to attend.
- Tues., Sept. 26 @ 2 p.m. — Teryl Cartwright: Author talk. Ms. Cartwright, author of the inspirational Regency romance Courting Constance, will read from the book and answer questions about her writing process. Please register to attend.
- Tues., Sept. 28 @ 6:30 p.m. — A Master Gardener will present ’Trees 101,’ a program about trees. Please register so that seating can be arranged.
- Thurs., Oct. 7 @ 7 p.m. — Jay Smar: “Old Time Mountain & Coal Mining Music.” National recording artist Jay Smar will perform his popular music. Please register so that seating can be arranged.
- Mon., Oct. 18 @ 7 p.m. — Writing coach Paul Bowersox. A published author and successful writing coach, Paul Bowersox will give a free presentation and answer questions. Please register so that seating can be arranged.
- Thurs., Oct. 21 @ 7 p.m. — Adult Book Group will meet to discuss Greg Mortenson’s Three Cups of Tea. The group’s meetings are free and informal. No registration is needed.
- Oct. 26 @ 6:30 p.m. — A Master Gardener will present a free program about “Vermiculture,” or worm composting. Please register to attend so that seating can be arranged.
- Wed., Nov. 17, Thurs., Nov. 18, and Fri., Nov. 19: The Public Library for Union County will hold the annual Fall Better Book Sale.
